How to choose a health coach for busy executives

Nine questions to ask before hiring a health coach as an executive, founder, attorney, or senior officer, and the answers that separate a coach who can work around a real calendar from one who cannot.

Short answer

Choose a health coach for a busy executive on five things, in this order: whether the plan is built from bloodwork or a questionnaire, whether travel is planned for or excused, whether accountability is daily and human, whether the coach adjusts one thing at a time, and whether anything medical has a physician behind it.

Accountability should be daily and human rather than a weekly form, and each adjustment should be one thing at a time with a written reason. Price and credentials matter, but they come after those five.

Start with what the plan is built from

Most coaches build the plan from an intake questionnaire and a photo. That works for a 28-year-old. For a man aged 40 to 65 who has deferred maintenance for two decades, it is a guess. The first question to ask any coach is: what data is the plan built from, and when is it retested? The answer you want is a clinical blood panel at intake, retested on a fixed schedule, with wearable and scale data in between.

Nine questions to ask on the first call

  1. What is the plan built from? Bloodwork and wearable data, or a questionnaire.
  2. When is it retested? A date, not “as needed.”
  3. What happens the week I travel? A travel variant of the sessions, or “do what you can.”
  4. What happens the day I do not log? A message from a human that day, or nothing.
  5. How many things do you change at once? One, with a written reason.
  6. Who makes the medical decisions? A physician by written handoff, or the coach.
  7. Who will I actually talk to? The person on the call, or someone else.
  8. How long is the engagement? Twelve months with three panels is a real arc. Month to month is a subscription.
  9. Show me a report. A sample Monday analysis, with the client’s name removed. If there is no such thing, there is no such cadence.

The answers that disqualify a coach

“We build it around you” with no data source. “Just message me anytime” with no cadence. “I have a doctor I refer to” with no defined handoff. A guarantee tied to weight loss in 30 days. Any coach who is willing to negotiate the standard on the first call will keep negotiating it.

How Executive Health Edge answers the nine

Plan built from a 75+ biomarker panel at month 0, retested at 6 and 12, with WHOOP or Oura and a Withings scale in between. Travel variant for every week. Same-day outreach when a client does not log. One adjustment at a time, written into the Friday report. A program physician for anything hormonal, pharmaceutical, or lab-dependent, by written handoff. One dedicated coach for the whole twelve months, matched to you by an advisor on the strategy call. Reports every Monday and Friday.

This page is coaching information, not medical advice. Questions about medication, hormones, or peptides go to the program physician.

Related questions

Should an executive's health coach be a doctor?

No. A coach coaches training, nutrition, sleep, and stress. What matters is that the program has a physician for the decisions a coach should never make, hormonal, pharmaceutical, or lab-dependent, and a written way for questions to reach that physician. A coach who answers those questions himself is a red flag, not a bonus.

How much time does executive health coaching take per week?

Three to four training sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, a few minutes a day to log, and one short weekly video review. A program that needs more than that from a man running a company will not survive contact with his calendar.

What should happen when I travel?

Every training week should ship with a travel variant, hotel gym and bodyweight versions of the same sessions with the same progression tracking, and a simplified nutrition target for the road, a protein floor and a calorie ceiling. If the coach's answer to travel is "do what you can," keep looking.

How do I know if a coach is actually watching my data?

Ask what happens on the day you do not log. The right answer is that you hear from a human that day. Then ask what the last adjustment was for a current client and why. A coach watching data can answer in one sentence with a number in it.

Online or in person?

For an executive, online with a real cadence beats in-person with a fixed appointment. The data (wearable, scale, logged sessions) travels with you. The appointment does not.

What credentials matter?

Less than the method. A coach with a written standard, a data-driven plan, and a physician behind him beats a wall of certifications with a template. Ask to see a sample Monday report before you sign anything.

Next step

Start with a call.

Forty-five minutes with an advisor: where you are, what the data would show, which coach fits, and whether the program is right for you. If it is not, you will be told.

The call is free. HSA and FSA funds may apply to the program, depending on your plan.
